sometimes you don’t need a great concept to get a really good laugh out of people. in this case lowe shanghai sucked – in a good way.

watching the latest jeep commercial you wonder what happened to the jeep brand. compare where jeep has been a few years ago and where it is today. all missing in that new piece of outdoor crap is that the animal family pulls over to stop for a white castle snack because wilderness has changed these days.

what is it that makes a jeep owner a jeep owner? beside some loyalty for a great product with history it is the desperate yearning for serious adventure and exploration of the great outdoors and a reliable tool which brings him from point a to b no matter how crazy the terrain inbetween is. and also, i don’t think i had to wait for that wolf getting the bird singing into my ear out of the way. plus, i had kicked him out of my car for throwing it up again.

david ostrowski

the 26 year old artist david ostrowski lives, works and was born in cologne, germany. his believe that possibilities in painting haven’t been completely explored yet might be the strong force behind his work which often incorporates the ironic use of popular cultural images and sayings.

he has created an intersting body of work and i’m curious of more to come. mark him in your mind.

check out the photo website von cellina von mannstein. interesting. most of the images don’t make you feel comfortable (which is usually a good thing regarding creative work) but definitely curious. in some you feel like strolling around with juergen teller in other ones like looking over terry richardson’s shoulder.

i keep an eye on her work since a few years now and not a lot has changed on her website. i guess the work represents truly her style and even though other names come to mind there is some unique truth to her images and the way she presents her work – quite detached from the commercial world surrounding her.

for a flip-flop company or brand which was almost down and done havaianas managed to come back big times. the color and powerful summer world they create makes you wanna go kind of bare feet immediately. i can feel and smell the beach. oooohhh, hola seniorita.

get your stationery upgraded

simple but fun tool. hp and burton partnered up regarding brand identity. a new web section of hp’s corporate website not only gives insight into burton’s history of branding but offers also a tool to get a stationery design within minutes – provided in a pdf form. having seen many bad identities throughout my life and knowing what those shitty train station machines offer and cost this is quite cool.

hp and burton – branding tools.

sharp or smart – part 4 - the journey continues

involving different directors for the same projects seems to be a continuous theme within motorola’s razr2 campaign. after gondry and tarsem had their spin for the tv commercials motorola also engaged sebastian lopez, the barbarian group and xiao xiao to interpret the before and after of the of the ninja plot (tarsem tv spot) for a webspecial.  the site allows users to edit their own storyline and film exploring the technical features of the new razr2.

sharp or smart – part 3 - a train journey

Posted on | October 9, 2007 | No Comments

why motorola produced two commercials (campaigns) for the same phone at the same time remains unclear. while gondry’s piece haven’t been spotted on tv yet this one runs pretty much all over the place – at least in the states and throughout europe.

this story is less fantastic than the gondry journey but edgy as well due to discussions and complaints about promoting knife fights. they should be answered: if only all knife fights would be with cell phones we had less serious crime. also, it seems like it ends with love, doesn’t it?

sharp or smart – part 2 - travel plans

Posted on | October 9, 2007 | No Comments

the spot alone is not enough. motorola created a fun website to go along with the journey through the phone. this is like getting insights into someones travel plans.

sharp or smart – part 1 - a journey through a cell phone

Posted on | October 9, 2007 | No Comments

in gondry’s latest commercial piece the viewer follows a young lady on her journey “through a cell phone”, experiencing and exploring different features. very gondry but very unusual for a cell phone commercial. this spot is edgy and polarizing in its own way – but for once not because of sex or sexual references.

even if some might be left behind with questions like “what does this lady do” or “what the hell is going on” this sophisticated story makes you think and sticks with you. i appreciated the emotional level of engagement i instantly had watching this commercial and others are obviously engaged with it as well (the ongoing discussion just proves it), whether they like it or not
