mass studies is a korean based architecture firm that was founded in 2003 by minsuk cho in seoul. the studio recently finished the design of shop for fashion retailer ann demeulemeester. the building consists of four levels, the shop, a multi-store and restaurant on the top floors. the project’s facade is made from a geo-textile planted with herbaceous perennials to form a living wall. the greenery is carried into the shop, incorporating nature whenever possible. the studio focuses on issues involving density and living in urban korean areas. the shop’s location is in a residential neighborhood that is evolving into a shopping district.

violin playing toyota robot

pretty crazy what we have to face in a few years and obviously that’s not the end. pretty sure our dark visions of robotic future will come true in one or the other way but if we develop and build robots for human pleasure now everyone knows how far the military versions of these must be already.

it’s been around for a while but i love that motorola colors webpage to create unique but powerful backgrounds for your computer. the phones at the bottom of the webpage don’t really matter and they are not in the background images you can save either. quite cool. check it out.
psyop

another (not recently released but still cool) visually intriguing piece directed by todd mueller and kylie matulick (produced by psyop). the new york motion animation and special effect house psyop is run and owned by both todd and kylie, but compared to many competitors they do direct and create a lot of their work inhouse and don’t concentrate on special effects only. nice shop.

beer time 2

guiness’ latest commercial – directed by marc craste – is a bit strange. visually interesting the story can’t hold up with the style and the pay off is flat. the microscopic view at the end creates and leaves me with the image of some unhygienic bacteria living in my beer. was hoping and expecting a more witty end.
organic is not only in but also stylish

browsing through the world of advertising and consumer commnication in general you feel it more and more: organic, very real, fantastical, street art alike or theatrical execution is in the trend. michel gondry doing it for a long time now (just produced the motorola “experience”, posted in my advertising section) probably was also one of the first working that way, also making it his signature style.
team one in california now produced a nice piece (director: stylewar) for lexus. just the fact that i’m on the edge of having enough of all organic in my life sets me off a bit. i am ready to move on.

american mustache institute

for all those who love hair in their face probably want to reach out to the american mustache institute. they are there for “protecting the rights of, and fighting discrimination against, mustached americans by promoting the growth, care, and culture of the mustache.”
i always wonder what those guys like about it. a common term for mustache is also “flavour saver” which can be interpreted in different ways but basically is true however you look at it. also, don’t those hairy stripes tickle in the nose? and guys think about it, once you start talking shit your face basically morphs into an ass.
